About Us

View of the waterfront near Sault Ste Marie Elks Lodge. — Sault Ste Marie, MI Elks Lodge #552
View of the waterfront near Sault Ste Marie Elks Lodge.

Perched along the East Portage Avenue corridor with a waterfront view that locals say is simply the best seat in the city, Elks Lodge #552 has been a cornerstone of the Sault Ste. Marie community for generations. The St. Marys River stretches out beyond the windows, and on a clear Upper Peninsula evening, there is genuinely nowhere else you'd rather be raising a glass.

The lodge earned its 4.5-star reputation the honest way, through consistent walleye dinners that draw crowds from across the region, a bar that keeps regulars coming back, and a membership that rolls up its sleeves for local causes. When guests talk about the atmosphere here, they keep landing on the same word: genuine. The staff, the volunteers, and the members all carry that same easy north-country warmth.

Chartered as BPOE Lodge #552, this lodge operates under the national Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks mission, which means every dollar spent here feeds back into scholarships, veterans' programs, and community support across Chippewa County. Good food, great views, and a cause worth toasting.

What We Offer

The lodge hosts everything from intimate receptions to full-scale wedding celebrations, and the hall's waterfront backdrop does a lot of the decorating for you. Couples and families repeatedly choose this venue because the setting is dramatic without being fussy, and the staff knows how to run a smooth event.

Friday fish dinners are a lodge institution, with walleye prepared the way the UP does it best. Beyond fish fry nights, the kitchen turns out rotating specials that give members and guests a genuine reason to show up mid-week. The full bar is well-stocked and the pour is honest.

Membership in Lodge #552 opens the door to a broader community: volunteer opportunities, Elks National Foundation programs, youth activities, and veterans' outreach. Whether you're attending a private event or exploring membership, the lodge at 1111 E Portage Ave offers something most venues simply cannot replicate, a purpose behind every gathering.

"So when should you check out the Elks Club? When they have a wonderful (perhaps the best) View in your city, especially when it is a waterfront view. When they have great people working and volunteering to make the club a wonderful place for their community. And when the food they serve is truly worth the trip, regardless of the destination. The walleye at the Elks is worthy of a trip regardless of everything else. After time in Hawaii, Miami, North Carolina, and San Francisco I have had some great fish; today I'm adding Sault Ste Marie's Elks Club (552) to my list of great fish places. The people working are committed to the club. And YES, the club was open to the public for dinner. Service was outstanding and many people are regulars / know each other which adds to the charm of the club - definitely small town in all the best ways. Cold beer at the bar, great fish (walleye), good fries and above average slaw made this a meal worth sharing. Friendly people serving, and checking on your service as well as the meal, even though they weren't our server but because they sincerely, genuinely care about us as customers is really unique and nice! Parking is easy. The view of the waterway is exceptional. The bar is old school. And a lot of fun. Yes, they have ship shots. You don't have to be a member of the Elks, but maybe it is something you should consider. Regardless, check out the Elks Club when it is open to the public, and ENJOY yourself!!!"
